This disorder occurs in Egyptian Arabian foals and can manifest from a few days to a few months of life. Affected foals are clinically normal between seizure episodes. Juvenile epilepsy is primarily a problem in Arab foals and they usually cease having seizures by 12 months of age. This article addresses the clinical signs, appropriate treatment and prognosis. This is the introduction to the article.
Information obtained from this study strongly suggests a heritable condition that merits further investigation. Juvenile idiopathic epilepsy of Egyptian Arabian foals and LFS appear to be phenotypically and genetically distinct disorders. There was no apparent association between JIE and LFS, CA, SCID, and OAAM1. Epilepsy is relatively uncommon in horses compared with other species and as yet little information is available. This condition is not usually fatal and appears to be self-limiting Affected foals are born normal and appear normal between epileptic seizures, usually outgrowing the condition between 12 and 18 months. Juvenile Idiopathic Epilepsy (JIE), also known as Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE) or Juvenile Epilepsy Syndrome (JES), is a brain disorder which appears to be self-limiting and is not usually fatal.
